DPF fault guide

Common DPF problems in Cardiff diesel vehicles.

DPF warning lights, limp mode and failed regenerations are rarely random. The filter may be blocked, but the real cause can be a sensor, EGR, boost, injector, thermostat or driving-pattern issue.

DPF Warning Light

A DPF light usually means soot loading is too high or the vehicle has not been able to complete a regeneration. Driving harder is not always the answer if a fault is stopping regen conditions.

DPF cleaning equipment

Failed Regeneration

Repeated failed regens can be caused by short journeys, low engine temperature, sensor faults, boost leaks, EGR faults, low fuel level or incorrect live data.

Technician diagnosing a vehicle

Limp Mode

When the ECU protects the engine, power can drop suddenly. We check the reason before clearing codes, because clearing the warning without fixing the cause can quickly block the filter again.

DPF filter cleaning process

Blocked or Ash-Loaded Filter

Soot can often be reduced through a controlled regen or cleaning route. Ash, melted internals, oil contamination or physical damage may mean repair or replacement is the sensible path.

Issues We Check Before Cleaning or Regen

Differential pressure sensor faults Exhaust temperature sensor faults EGR valve sticking or flow issues AdBlue and NOx sensor faults Boost leaks and split hoses Injector and fuelling problems Thermostat and low temperature problems Oil ash and high mileage loading Short journey driving patterns Previous DPF removal or hollowed filters

DPF, AdBlue and EGR Fault Codes

These are common generic OBD fault codes linked to diesel particulate filters, SCR/AdBlue systems, NOx sensors and EGR faults. Manufacturer-specific codes vary by vehicle, so the code is only the starting point. Live data, sensor readings and the conditions that allow regeneration matter just as much.

Common DPF Fault Codes

P2002DPF efficiency below threshold, often seen with soot loading, damaged filters or sensor issues.
P2003DPF efficiency fault on bank 2 where fitted.
P242FDiesel particulate filter ash accumulation. Cleaning may not be enough if ash load is excessive.
P244ADPF differential pressure too low, often sensor, pipe or wiring related.
P244BDPF differential pressure too high, commonly blocked filter, pipe restriction or pressure sensor fault.
P2452DPF pressure sensor A circuit fault.
P2453DPF pressure sensor A range or performance fault.
P2454DPF pressure sensor A circuit low.
P2455DPF pressure sensor A circuit high.
P2456DPF pressure sensor A intermittent or erratic signal.
P2458DPF regeneration duration problem, often failed or incomplete regens.
P2459DPF regeneration frequency problem, often repeated short journeys or unresolved faults.
P2463DPF soot accumulation. Vehicle may refuse regen if soot level is too high.
P246BVehicle conditions incorrect for DPF regeneration.
P246CDPF restriction or forced limited power condition.
P246DDPF pressure too high or filter restriction fault.

Common AdBlue, SCR and NOx Codes

P20E8Reductant pressure too low. Often AdBlue pump, pipe, injector or tank module related.
P20E9Reductant pressure too high.
P20EESCR NOx catalyst efficiency below threshold.
P204FReductant system performance fault.
P207FReductant quality performance fault. Can be fluid quality, NOx data or SCR performance.
P208AReductant pump control circuit open.
P208BReductant pump control range or performance fault.
P208CReductant pump control circuit low.
P208DReductant pump control circuit high.
P202AAdBlue tank heater control circuit fault.
P203AReductant level sensor circuit fault.
P203BReductant level sensor range or performance fault.
P2047Reductant injector circuit open.
P2048Reductant injector circuit low.
P2049Reductant injector circuit high.
P2200NOx sensor circuit bank 1 fault.
P2201NOx sensor range or performance bank 1.
P2202NOx sensor circuit low bank 1.
P2203NOx sensor circuit high bank 1.
P229FNOx sensor 2 range or performance fault.

Common EGR Fault Codes

P0400EGR flow malfunction.
P0401EGR insufficient flow, often blocked passages, sticking valve or control fault.
P0402EGR excessive flow.
P0403EGR control circuit fault.
P0404EGR control range or performance fault.
P0405EGR sensor A circuit low.
P0406EGR sensor A circuit high.
P0407EGR sensor B circuit low.
P0408EGR sensor B circuit high.
P0409EGR sensor A circuit fault.
P0488EGR throttle position control range or performance fault.
P0490EGR control circuit high.
P1400-P1499Manufacturer-specific EGR and emissions faults used by some makes.

Do Not Ignore a DPF Light

The earlier a DPF fault is diagnosed, the more options you usually have. Once soot loading gets too high, the vehicle may block regeneration for safety and require deeper diagnostic work, cleaning, repair or replacement.
